Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation Center

For people recovering from heart disease, trying to prevent it, or wish to reverse the disease process.

The Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation Center at HUMC is a multidisciplinary program offering preventive and rehabilitative programs involving both education, exercise and counseling. Programs are individualized, and geared to anyone recovering from, trying to prevent, or wish to reverse any form of heart disease. The staff are specially trained nurses, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, counselers and is medically supervised.

 

Program Types

Heart Recovery Program - For those recovering from heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, angioplasty, atherectomy, stent or rotoblader, or diagnosed with stable angina. It may be started within 2-3 weeks after hospital discharge. Visits are 3 times weekly and program length may last 2-12 weeks and is individually tailored to each person need. This "monitored" program assists participant's with the recovery period, returning to optimum lifestyle as soon as possible, while assisting with making lifestyle changes that will reduce the incidence or prevent recurrence of the disease. Includes nutrition counseling, individual and group support, exercise, stress management and other risk reduction techniques.

Supervised Program - is for anyone wishing to exercise in a medically supervised setting, while receiving guidance and education in reducing the risk factors for heart disease. Visits are 3 times weekly and program length may last from 1 week to 3 months, depending on individual need.

Exercise Training Program - for those wishing instruction in healthy exercise programs in a medically supervised setting. Visits are once a week for 4 weeks.

Heart Disease Reversal Program - offers participants the concepts of an aggressive risk reduction program, which based on recent research, has been shown to reverse the process of coronary artery disease. Weekend workshops occur throughout the year and an ongoing maintenance program occurs weekly.

 

Risk Reduction/Prevention Programs
  • Nutrition Workshop - provides classes on healthy low fat diet, label reading, shopping, eating out, and how what we eat contributes to heart disease. Includes periodic cooking class. Individual consultations provide personal and individual meal plans. Pre-registration required.

  • Stress Management Workshop - a 4 session (weekly for a month) program that includes education about stress and heart disease, and teaches techniques for managing everyday stress including visualization, imagery, breathing, stretching and stress identification techniques. Pre-registration required.

  • Support Group - Both individual and group counseling is available to help the patient and family recover from a heart event or cope with the lifestyle changes necessary in reducing the process of heart disease. Occurs weekly.

  • Weight Loss and Management Program - for individuals wishing to lose weight or learn how to maintain their goal weight. 3 months in length, including education, nutrition counseling, support and an optional exercise program.

  • Diabetic Education Program - offered monthly in a 3 night class and includes education regarding exercise, gluicose monitoring, meal planning, medications, emergencies, foot care, dealing with stress, health maintenance measures and traveling.

 

Complementary/Alternative Programs The following programs are available for those wishing to address their health as part of complementary medicine practices, and may be registered for individually:
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Massage Therapy


Assessing Your Risk For Heart Disease
A computer profile provides an individual assessment for your risk for heart disease, highlighting the highest risk areas, and providing suggestions for lowering the risks identified. A mail in questionnaire allows you to find out in the comfort of your own home!


Insurance Reimbursement
The Heart Recovery Program is covered by most major insurance carriers. All other programs are self-pay, but may be submitted for your carrier. Call your carrier for specific coverage information.


Entering The Programs
Any program including exercise requires a physician prescription and a recent exercise stress test. An admission interview starts the program. All other programs simply require a phone call to register!
