PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR
AT HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER
Hackensack University Medical Center recently held its annual Physicians Recognition Evening to recognize physicians that have served the medical center for 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 60 years. During the event, Peter DeMauro, M.D. was named Outstanding Physician of the Year at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. DeMauro has a private practice in Hackensack and is an attending physician in the medical center’s Department of Internal Medicine. He is also chairman of the MSO for Hackensack University Medical Center as well as co-director of the Performance Improvement Department. "It was because of my Rolling Stone tie collection," said Dr. DeMauro regarding his feeling on the recognition of Outstanding Physician of Hackensack University Medical Center. "On a serious note, it is an absolute honor to represent the medical center’s Outstanding Physician." Dr. DeMauro’s involvement with Hackensack University Medical Center began 14 years ago when he was chief resident. Peter Gross, M.D., chairman, Department of Internal Medicine reminisces, "He only missed one morning report and that was the day his daughter was born." Since his residency, Dr. DeMauro began his climb to success, starting out as the physician who was responsible for reviewing and coding medical charts. His career grew over the years, to become one of the largest private practices in the Hackensack area which he shares with four partners. Aside from the excellent care that he provides to his patients, Dr. DeMauro worked with John P. Ferguson, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Hackensack University Medical Center and Charles Riccobono, M.D., medical director of Performance Improvement at the medical center, to link physicians and administration to work together to successfully negotiate with Managed Care Organizations. "Because of Dr. DeMauro’s expertise, Hackensack University Medical Center is one of the few hospitals in the country to have this cooperative effort," said Mr. Ferguson. Dr. DeMauro was also responsible for another precedent that was established by Hackensack University Medical Center. With his knowledge of computers, he created a web site for the medical center, naming the institution as the first university hospital to be featured on the internet. "I never know what to expect from Dr. DeMauro next," said Dr. Riccobono. "He is constantly striving to better every aspect of the healthcare environment."
